Paddle boarding, or stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), is often misunderstood in various ways. Here are some common misconceptions:
1. It's Only for the Ocean:
Many people think paddle boarding is exclusive to the ocean, but it can be enjoyed on lakes, rivers, and even calm bays. Most of my offerings are at Yellowwood Lake.
2. It's Easy and Requires No Skill: While paddle boarding can be picked up quickly, it does require some balance and technique. I teach accessibility for all.
3. You Have to Stand the Whole Time: Stand-up paddle boarding suggests you must always stand, but kneeling, sitting, or even lying down are all acceptable positions, especially for beginners or when the water is rough. You can do this!
4. It's Not a Workout: Paddle boarding can be a full-body workout, engaging the core, legs, and upper body. It can be as leisurely or intense as you make it. We mostly stroll and look for birds.
5. It's Expensive to Get Started: While high-end boards and equipment can be pricey, there are affordable options for beginners. I use the Glide Brand of boards.
6. Just for Young People: Paddle boarding is a versatile sport that people of all ages can enjoy. It's low-impact and can be gentle on the joints, making it suitable for older individuals as well. Just last weekend I had an 81 year old man stand the entire time! His wife was most comfortable being seated crosslegged.
8. You Need Perfect Balance: While balance is important, boards come in various sizes and widths to accommodate different skill levels. Wider boards provide more stability, making it easier for beginners. My boards are more on the wider side than most of the industry.
Understanding these misconceptions can help more people appreciate and try out paddle boarding, enjoying the many benefits it offers.
